I am experienced at the conservation and restoration of paintings on canvas, wood, metal, paper and glass in historic methods and styles. Occasionally full reproductions are requested as part of a piece of furniture or a clock. The work may involve:

  • Cleaning surface dirt and discoloured varnish
  • Repairing tears and filling holes
  • Refixing flaking paint
  • Re-touching missing areas
  • Re-varnishing
  • Repairing giltwood frames and re-gilding & toning to match

This 18th century portrait of Shakespeare was buried beneath a layer of degraded varnish and only visible with flash camera. The frame had been over-painted with metal paint which had tarnished and the compo mouldings had broken.

An 18th century English automata clock made for the Chinese market:

The oval reverse glass paintings were smashed and reproductions were commissioned, along with a painting on silk for the curtain which raised to show the moving puppets. The style is naïve, appropriate to the original work.
